About the Salvation Army CT:  The Salvation Army in New London was founded in 1884; also supports The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club; provides a Food Pantry, Rent Assistance, Utility Assistance, and this year will be providing hope to 225 families for Christmas… Many (New London County) Connecticut families are struggling this year and are worried about having toys under the Christmas tree. With unemployment rising, many parents are looking for work and need help. The Salvation Army will continue to help Rescue Christmas for families in need. But what “Rescue Christmas” is really about is meeting the need of the community including feeding hungry families, helping people stay in their homes, and providing utility assistance to keep the lights on during this unprecedented pandemic. The Salvation Army is hopeful for a fundraising season that is plentiful. The Connecticut Red Kettle goal is $455,000. The goals are low as a result of the COVID crisis, expecting fewer Red Kettles, retail stores closing, job loss, and a national coin shortage. The need hasn’t changed, however – The Salvation Army needs support now more than ever.

The History of the Red Kettle Program:  The first Red Kettle was put out by a Salvation Army officer in San Francisco in 1891. In that first year, money collected paid for a Christmas dinner for the area’s poor. Funds collected by the Red Kettle are the backbone of The Salvation Army’s mission and ministry. The coming weeks are critical. Millions of Americans have been impacted by COVID-19 and are experiencing incredible need. The Salvation Army is serving a new population of families in (New London County) Connecticut who have never needed us before.
