A University of Michigan study shows that helping close friends can increase happiness and purpose for older adults. Researchers found that providing practical support, such as giving rides or helping with tasks, often leads to more positive emotions. The study involved 180 adults in the Greater Austin area, with an average age of 74. Participants tracked their moods and social interactions every three hours for nearly a week. The findings, published in Research on Aging, revealed gender differences. Older women maintained steady moods when offering emotional support, while men often felt worse. Researcher Crystal Ng said this may conflict with masculine role expectations, adding that practical help can strengthen purpose and engagement, especially for men. (Story URL)
