A new study finds that Americans aged 25 to 44 are dying at much higher rates than their peers in other wealthy countries. Researchers from Harvard, the University of Minnesota, Boston University, and Hunter College report that in 2023, people in this age group were 2.6 times more likely to die than those in similar nations. The study says 62% of deaths among U.S. millennials are considered excess, meaning they would not occur if U.S. rates matched those abroad. Researchers blame rising deaths on the opioid epidemic, suicide, homicide, accidents, and chronic diseases. Dr. Georges Benjamin of the American Public Health Association says, “We began to see rises in morbidity and mortality because of obesity and, of course, the persistence of firearms.” (Story URL)
