New research finds that nearly a third of people possess a “highly sensitive” personality trait linked to increased risk of depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders. Analyzing over 12,000 individuals across 33 studies, researchers at Queen Mary University of London found moderate connections between heightened environmental sensitivity and common psychological problems. Sensitive people tend to process sensory information more deeply and react strongly to their surroundings. While this trait exists on a spectrum, about 31% display high sensitivity. Yet most healthcare providers don’t routinely assess for this factor. The findings suggest sensitivity may warrant greater consideration in mental health treatment, as certain therapies may be more effective for this population. (StudyFinds)
